Nube

This project was created for the Natural Connections installation, organized by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) for the Madrid Design Festival. The six-meter long hanging work is made up of 4,000 small interconnected wooden balls and cylinders, which form a mesh that filters the light, generating an interesting play of light and shadow that envelops the visitor.

Taking inspiration from the traditional wooden blinds of Mediterranean towns, we interpreted wood through lighting and created an 'electric cloud' for the Matadero space. Titled Nube (Cloud), the piece is composed of small pieces of wood, all identical and mechanically produced.

We used a large-scale production process, enabling the creation of many elements repeated numerous times in a straightforward manner. We reserved the craft component, which is the soul of our work, for assembly and installation. Small balls and cylinders made of red oak, cherry, and maple wood come together to form an electrified mesh that filters the light, creating an intriguing interplay of light and shadow that envelops the visitor.

Nube's lighting comes from LED lights placed in the center of its hollow structure. For this purpose, a brass cable is used that extends from the base to the mesh, dividing into positive and negative electric currents. In this way, the positive poles pass through the cherry wood, while the negative poles pass through the maple pieces, forming a complete circuit on contact and illuminating the bulbs.
